Texas Hold'em Secrets

Author: Tom Shannahan

Texas Holdem is a game that anyone can learn how to play. As soon as you understand the basics, spend plenty of time practicing. Here are few tips to help you improve your game.

Just because you watch the tournaments on TV, doesnt mean that you are a World Series of Poker champion. Televised tournaments are different than regular online poker games. On TV viewers are exposed only to the highlights of certain tourneys. Every hand seems exciting because they cut out four hours of boring poker. When you play in an online tournament, those extra boring hours cant be cut out. If you want to learn about the game of poker you should practice it, not view it.

Dont get in over your head. If youre a beginning player, dont try to battle players that are clearly better than you. Find competition that you can hang with, otherwise youre going to lose money before youve even gained any experience. Play for free if you have to, or only participate in low-limit games. Theres no reason to assume that as newbie, youll get lucky. Poker is a game of chance, but the role that luck plays is diminished by experience.

Even if youre playing online, there are still ways to read other players tells. If an online player is quick to check, they probably have a weak hand, and if an online player places a quick, substantial bet on the turn or the river card, this player probably has a pretty strong hand. When online players frequently use the auto-play feature, and then suddenly deviate from their set pattern, this indicates a change in the players approach.

Dont get discouraged by bad cards or bad beats. If you still have chips after a bad beat, youre still in the game. Avoid freaking out after something surprisingly negative happens to you while playing poker. If you end up losing you temper, youll probably start playing like a madman. If you remain calm and collected, you can avoid hitting tilt, and remain competitive even under stressful circumstances.

If you have decent cards before the flop, raise the pot. Convince other players that its not worth chasing a hand. Slow-playing can be useful, but when you have good cards, raise the stakes, and make other players pay to see what you have.

Read Texas Holdem strategy books, practice online for low-stakes, and develop your own approach to the game. The more comfortable you are with the game and with your strategy, the more success you will have as a player.
